A preliminary look at sleep studies:
•Polysomnograph sleep studies measure about ten items, of which three
are Nasal airflow, Pulse, and Oxygen saturation.
•This chart shows differences in Nasal airflow, Pulse, and Oxygen saturation
between Normal breathing, Obstructive Apnea, and Central Apnea.
•Notice that Nasal airflow, Pulse, and Oxygen saturation are all steady
in Normal sleep, but not so in either OSA or CSA.
•The purple areas in Obstructive
Apnea are obstructions; the deep pink
areas in Central Apnea are Central events, and the light
pink areas in both Obstructive Apnea and in Central Apnea are
desaturations of oxygen.
